What to know about menstruation

Menstruation, also known as period, is a natural biological process that women undergo for a major period of their lives. It is the regular discharge of menstrual fluid through the vagina that occurs as part of a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle and usually lasts around two to seven days.
Many people question if having sex before, during, or right after their period is safe. Some factors need to be taken into account when considering sex during menstruation.

SIDE EFFECTS
1.Risk of sexually transmitted disease
Sex during menstruation increases the spread of infection This is due factors such as the loss of cervical mucus plug, iron in menstrual blood, dilated cervical opening, increased alkaline pH of vagina and increase in estrogen and progesterone level.
2. Risk of pelvic inflammatory disease
Another consequence of sex during menstruation is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). It is an infection of the reproductive system that leads to pain and inflammation in the pelvic area.
3. Increase in menstrual blood flow
This is due to rupture of uterine veins, which are congested and are prone to damage during this time of the month.
4. Increases risk of endometriosis Research shows a double number of reported cases of patients of endometriosis who indulge in sex during menstruation compared to patients of endometriosis who do not.
5. Risk of pelvic congestion
Sex during menstruation increases pelvic congestion which causes discomfort and pain
6. Sex can be messy and smelly
Sex during menstrual flow can be messy as there is active bleeding going on while having sex. The blood can spread on the bedcover, body as well as your partner making it smelly and messy.
Even though most religions frown at it and there is no hard and fast rule to having sex while menstruating, the pros and cons should be considered.
