Football, they say can be unforgiving at times and when it does, it is the career of some Footballers that suffer from these misfortunes. One footballer who suffered this fate was legendary Dutch player named Marco Van Basten.
A legendary football striker who is seen as one of the greatest Footballers of all time. He is seen as the second best Dutch footballer of all time just behind the legendary Johan Cruyff. He scored 300 goals during his short career.
At his peak, he was known for his aerial ability, acrobatic shots, technical ability and shooting accuracy. He also possessed a great close control of the ball. He played for Ajax where he scored 128 goals in 133 appearances. Ac Milan signed him and he scored 90 goals in 147 appearances for the team.
He won the UEFA Champions league title and other titles with Ajax and AC Milan. Also won the 1988 Euros with his country, Netherlands. His ability on the Football pitch earned him so much praise that he won the FIFA Ballon Dor on three different occasions in 1988, 1989 and 1992. He was great to watch.
But he had one problem which most great players unfortunately suffer from, injuries. A troublesome knee injury which surfaced when he was the peak of his career ensured he retired from Fooball at the age of just 28. The injury at first meant that he would be out for few months, but he continued suffering a relapse which lasted for two years and made him give up and just retire.
He went into coaching and had spells at Ajax, Az Alkmaar, Heerveen and the Dutch National team. But he left coaching in 2017 because he said ” he could not handle the stress”.
Marco Van Basten’s career has shown that you can be a great Footballer but if you have the bad luck of injuries, your career would suffer. Van Basten would have won more Ballon Dors that would have rivalled the amount that Ronaldo and Messi has won but injuries ensured that he ended his career at the age of just 28.
